Tyler Heights Elementary School (Backpack Buddies) – Backpack Buddies is a mission program addressing hungry children in Annapolis. Started in 2010 by Brenda and Terry Schoener, Backpack Buddies provides weekend feeding for children recommended by Tyler Heights Elementary School. Children, pre-school through 5th grade, receive a backpack as they leave every Friday containing non-refrigerated, non-cook food for seven meals. Each child has a sponsor who provides $25.00 per month, meets and knows the student by name, keeps the student in prayer, sends notes of encouragement, and often little remembrances perhaps on birthdays or for no particular reason. Another group called "Friends of Backpack Buddies" provides holiday meals at Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving, winter coats and hats, funds for field trips, and occasional needed household items backs up sponsors. The program honors Woods Elder Faye Daniel, who as principal, was the creative spirit who shped Tyler Heights Elementary to be a remarkable place for children. For more information contact Brenda or Terry Schoener.
